Privacy policy
This policy explains what personal information Renomates collects, why, who sees it and the choices you have. Renomates is run by Laura Marie Quattrocelli trading as Renomates Co (ABN 24 316 120 668) (“we”, “us”). We handle personal information in line with the Australian Privacy Principles in the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth).
1. What we collect
- Account details: your email address and password. Your password is handled by our sign-in provider and stored in scrambled (hashed) form, so we can’t see it. If you use Google sign-in, we receive your name and email from Google.
- Profile: your name, and optionally your suburb, a short bio and your Instagram handle.
- What you post: listing details (headline, suburb, state, postcode, reno types, costs, timeframes, tradies’ names, trades and ratings, council notes, your story), photos and captions. We store a map point for the suburb, not your street address. We ask you not to post personal details about other people.
- Messages you send and receive through Renomates, the renos and tradies you save (your tradie book), the members you block and any reports you make. Only you can see what you save.
- Notify-me list: if you ask to be notified about renos near you, your email address and optional suburb. We use it only to tell you about new renos and you can ask us to remove it at any time at hello@renomates.co.
- Technical information: when you use the site, our service providers’ servers automatically receive your IP address and basic device and browser information.
- Information on your device: we use your browser’s storage to keep you signed in, save unfinished drafts and remember which messages you’ve read.
We don’t ask for sensitive information (such as health or financial account details). Please don’t put any in your listings or messages.
2. Why we use it
- to run Renomates: create and secure your account, show listings and the map, let you save renos and message other members;
- to keep the community safe and honest: handle reports, investigate misuse, remove content and suspend accounts;
- to send service emails, such as confirming your email address, resetting your password and letting you know when you receive a new message (you can turn message alerts off in your profile; they never include the message itself);
- to understand how the site is used and improve it;
- to meet our legal obligations and handle disputes.
We will only send you marketing emails if you’ve agreed to receive them, and you’ll be able to unsubscribe at any time. We don’t sell your personal information.
3. Who can see it
- Everyone, including people who aren’t members: your name, your listings and photos, costs and tradie reviews, and your Instagram handle if you add it. Treat anything you publish as public. Your email address is not shown on your profile.
- Other members: the messages you send them. Messages are not public.
- Only you: your saved renos and account email.
- Us: we can access the information described above in order to run and moderate the service.
4. Companies that help us run Renomates
We use these service providers, and they may handle your information for us:
- Supabase: database, sign-in and photo storage [data region: CONFIRM, e.g. Sydney].
- GitHub: hosting of the website files.
- Resend: sending sign-up and service emails.
- Google: fonts used by the site, Google Analytics (site usage statistics), Google Maps (if enabled), and Google sign-in if you choose it.
- jsDelivr and unpkg (code libraries) and OpenStreetMap (map tiles): your browser contacts them when you load the site, so they receive your IP address and browser details.
We may also disclose information when the law requires it, to protect people’s safety or rights, or as part of a sale or restructure of our business (in which case we’d make sure the same protections apply).
5. Overseas providers
Some of these providers store or process information outside Australia, including in the United States. We take reasonable steps to choose providers with appropriate security and privacy practices.
6. Cookies and similar technologies
We use Google Analytics to understand how the site is used (for example, which pages are visited and how many people share a reno). It sets cookies, collects your approximate location (city level), device and browser type, and the pages and actions you take, and sends this to Google. We turn on IP anonymisation, switch off Google advertising features and never send your name, email or message content to Google. You can opt out with the Google Analytics opt-out browser add-on or by blocking cookies in your browser. We don’t use advertising cookies. We also use your browser’s local storage to keep you signed in, save drafts and remember read messages. You can clear this in your browser settings, but you may be signed out.
7. Security
We use reasonable measures to protect your information, including encrypted connections (HTTPS), access controls on our database and removing location data from photos before upload. No system is perfectly secure. If a data breach is likely to cause you serious harm, we will notify you and the regulator as required by law.
8. How long we keep it, and deleting it
We keep your information while you have an account. You can edit your profile and listings yourself, or delete a listing at any time. You can delete your account yourself at any time from your profile (“Delete my account”). This permanently removes your profile, listings, photos, saved renos and messages. If you can’t sign in, email hello@renomates.co from your account email address and we’ll action it within [X] days. Backups, reports and records we need for legal reasons may be kept for a limited time [X]. We can’t recall copies that other people have already saved or shared.
9. Seeing and correcting your information
You can ask for a copy of the personal information we hold about you, or for corrections, by emailing us. We’ll respond within a reasonable time (usually 30 days).
10. Children
Renomates is for people aged 18 and over. We don’t knowingly collect information from children. If you think a child has an account, please tell us.
11. Complaints
If you’re concerned about how we’ve handled your information, email hello@renomates.co with the details. We’ll acknowledge it promptly and aim to respond within 30 days. If you’re not satisfied, you can contact the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner at oaic.gov.au.
12. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy and will post the new version here with a new date.
